Many existing homes don't have all their water pipes insulated, only those that will be exposed to freezing temperatures (which hardly ever happens in Pinellas County) or those that carry hot water.
But all your pipes can benefit from insulation, whether they carry cold or hot water. Here are four reasons, other than freezing temperatures, to insulate water supply pipes.
1. Reduce Pest Attraction
You may have known that leaks and dripping faucets can attract pests, but did you know that even totally intact pipes can provide a water source for pests? Cold water pipes may produce condensation on their exterior surfaces where the warmer air of your home touches the pipe.
Tiny insects such as silverfish, earwigs, and even cockroaches can easily subsist with only water droplets as a water source. So to avoid providing them with the means to live in your walls or under your sink, consider insulating all your cold water pipes to provide a buffer between the cold surface and the warmer air. The insulation reduces the chances of water condensing.
2. Reduce Moisture Problems
It may not seem like a cold water pipe that collects condensation can actually cause a moisture problem. After all, it's only collecting water that was already present in the air as humidity (something Florida has in plentiful supply). However, like the condensation on uninsulated windows, the collected moisture on the outside of a pipe can cause a localized moisture problem.
The condensation can drip or run down onto nearby materials such as drywall, wood, or insulation. Once wet, these materials may grow mold or even start to rot, compromising their structural integrity and causing water damage that can spread to other nearby materials. Mold and rot can also attract termites and greatly reduce your indoor air quality.
If you have cold water pipes in your walls, you could head off some of these potential problems by adding insulation.
3. Improve Energy Efficiency
Even if your area rarely dips below freezing, it can still be beneficial to insulate your hot water pipes. That's because your water heater requires energy to heat up the water, and when the water sits in the pipes between uses it can cool off, dispersing the energy to the surrounding air. Insulating the pipe allows the water to stay hot longer.
In addition, if the pipe runs inside your home, the excess heat will be transmitted to the indoor air, meaning your AC has to work that much harder. So insulating your pipes could even offer a small benefit in the area of AC energy efficiency.
4. Take Comfortable Showers
The further away from the water heater your bathroom is, the more heat the water will lose between the heater and the shower or bath. If you like to take hot showers, this can be a highly inconvenient factor. Your instinct may be to turn up the water heater's settings to ensure the water is still hot enough by the time it reaches your bathroom.
But you may not have to turn up the temperature of your water heater. Instead, just insulate the pipes to reduce the amount of lost heat, rather than spending more heat energy.
These benefits demonstrate why your water pipes all deserve to be insulated. Fortunately, pipe insulation typically doesn't cost much for the materials, and you can have the installation done by a professional so it won't take up your valuable time. After a quick professional insulating job, you can reap all the benefits described above without a huge outlay of cash.
