Sewer repairs
Sanitary sewer is the most essential aspect of your home’s plumbing system. If the sewer does not work properly a home will quickly become unlivable. The plumbing trade was created largely to solve the problems associated with sewage and its disposal. Many of the great plagues and diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and smallpox are directly attributed to poor sewer systems.
Common causes
1. The most common cause of a sewer malfunction is a sewer break. Pipes may break for a number of reasons. Often, the pipe simply wears due to age. Your sewer pipe was likely installed when the home was built and most home owners have never performed any maintenance on the system. Like all things, the sewer pipe was not designed to last forever.
2. The second most common cause of sewer breaks is inferior quality materials. Some commonly used inferior pipes are, orangeberg, ABS, thin wall PVC, and clay pipe. In most instances, these materials are no longer approved for plumbing use.
3. Roots are the cause of our third most prevalent sewer breaks. Root are strong enough to break holes in pipes. Once the root finds a source of water, the root will multiply and damage will compound. Roots will often grow under or over a pipe and cause the pipe to move or shift. When a pipe does not have proper downward pitch, it will not drain properly.
4. Another very common cause of sewer line breaks is putting stuff down the drain that should not be. This is also the most preventable of the four most common sewer breaks. Grease, “flushable” wipes, and even kids’ toys, will often become lodged so thoroughly in a pipe that the pipe must be cut out and replaced.
Don’t wait
We find that the majority of homeowners do no maintenance to there sewer system until it’s too late. It is always less expensive to maintain your existing sewer before a catastrophic failure. If your sewer is old, consider replacing it before it fails. This will allow you to do the job on your terms rather than as an emergency. Some of the most expensive insurance claims are caused by sewer breaks. If you are one of the many homeowners that do not have insurance, you should consider that the average sewage flood claim is $20,000. One man in Oregon spent $300,000 to remove sewage from his home.
What can Scotto’s do?
1. We are able to video inspect the inside of sewer pipes. This camera goes down the sewer and makes a color video of the condition of the pipe. We can use it to locate breaks or diagnose the cause of sewer problems.
2. We can treat the inside of the sewer pipes with Bio-Clean. This works to naturally break down organic mater such as grease and waste.
3. Our plumbers can also hydro-jet the sewer to clean out grease and rust. The hydro-jet machine is similar to a pressure washer that goes inside a sewer pipe.
4. We perform smoke tests with an artificial smoke machine in order to locate hard to find sewer breaks.
5. We also perform all types of sewer repair and replacement.
